WHAT FLORIDA VENUES REQUIRE

Most Florida wedding venues require proof of liability insurance before they will confirm your date – usually a minimum of $1 million per occurrence and $2 million aggregate. Beach resorts, waterfront properties, and hotels in Miami, Orlando, and the Keys frequently ask for higher limits, and nearly all Florida venues ask to be named as an additional insured on your certificate, which extends your policy’s protection to the venue for your event.

Wedsure® Wedding Insurance issues that Certificate of Insurance instantly, at whatever limit your venue requires – from the standard $1M/$2M up through $2M/$5M and higher – with the venue listed exactly as they have asked. You can email or print it the moment you buy, which matters at Florida’s busy destination venues, where proof of insurance is often due well ahead of the event.

ALCOHOL AND HOST LIQUOR LIABILITY AT A FLORIDA WEDDING

Good news first: Florida is one of the most protective states in the country when it comes to alcohol liability.

Florida’s dram-shop statute is often called a “reverse dram shop” law: it shields those who serve alcohol to adults of legal drinking age from liability for what the drinker later does – even if the guest was visibly intoxicated. The statute’s two narrow exceptions – knowingly furnishing alcohol to someone under 21, and knowingly serving someone habitually addicted to alcohol – were written for licensed sellers, not private hosts (Bankston v. Brennan, Fla. 1987). The shield covers harm caused by a guest’s intoxication, though, not ordinary carelessness. So for a typical wedding with adult guests, Florida law is largely on your side.

Underage drinking is the exception that still reaches you. Giving alcohol to anyone under 21 is a criminal offense in Florida, with no exception for parents serving their own children. Florida’s open-house-party law adds penalties for an adult who knowingly allows underage drinking at a residence they control – a home, apartment or other dwelling – and courts have used that law to support civil claims against hosts, which matters especially if you’re marrying at a private home or family property. The safest rule for your wedding is simple: no alcohol to anyone under 21, full stop, and have your bar service card everyone – a careful, good-faith ID check is a complete defense under Florida law.

For the bar itself, professional service is still the smart play. A licensed caterer or bartending service knows Florida’s rules on checking IDs and refusing service, and they should carry their own liquor liability insurance – ask for a certificate of insurance naming you as an additional insured, and carry your own host liquor liability alongside it. If guests will pay for drinks in any form – a cash bar or a ticketed reception – selling alcohol in Florida requires a license, so that is normally handled by your licensed caterer or venue rather than by you, and it can change which coverage applies. If any payment is connected to alcohol at your reception, talk to your venue and an insurance specialist first.

So why do Florida venues still require host liquor liability coverage from you? Because a protective statute limits liability, not lawsuits – anyone connected to an alcohol-related incident can still be named, and defending even a winning case is expensive. And the duty to keep the property reasonably safe sits outside the alcohol rules entirely – at a private home, that duty is yours. That is why venues ask you to carry host liquor liability and to add them as an additional insured.

On coverage: ‘Host Liquor Liability’ is included free with every Wedsure liability policy and is designed for hosts serving alcohol without charging guests for it – which fits most weddings and is the coverage most venues are asking for when they ask about alcohol. If you plan to charge for drinks in any way, that generally calls for separate ‘Liquor Liability’, which host liquor coverage does not provide – see the difference explained in our FAQ, get Liquor Liability through RVNA’s event insurance, or contact us and a specialist will point you to the right coverage. All coverage is subject to the terms, conditions, and exclusions of the issued policy.

WEDDING VENUES ACROSS FLORIDA AND WHAT THEY TYPICALLY REQUIRE

Florida runs from the Keys to the Panhandle, and few states offer more wedding settings – beach resorts, historic districts, waterfront estates, gardens, and grand hotels. The kind of venue you choose shapes both the coverage you need and the requirements you have to meet, and along Florida’s coasts, hurricane season is worth planning around. Here is what to expect where couples ask most.

MIAMI

Miami’s beachfront hotels, rooftop venues, and waterfront estates are among the most in-demand in the state, and higher-end properties frequently require limits above the $1M/$2M baseline plus precise additional-insured wording. As a coastal metro, Miami also sits squarely in hurricane-season territory, so cancellation coverage – purchased early – is worth serious thought for summer and fall dates.

ORLANDO

Orlando’s resorts, golf clubs, and hotel ballrooms range from grand to intimate, and most require a standard liability certificate with the venue named as additional insured. Inland Orlando is less exposed to direct coastal storms than the beaches, but tropical systems still bring heavy rain and travel disruption, so weigh cancellation coverage for hurricane-season dates.

KEY WEST

The southernmost point offers laid-back island and waterfront venues, and its remoteness is a real planning factor – a named storm can close the single highway connecting the Keys and strand guests. Venues require standard certificates and additional-insured status, and hurricane-season couples should buy cancellation coverage early, given how exposed the islands are.

TAMPA

Tampa’s bayfront venues and historic Ybor City spaces range from waterfront to industrial-chic, and most require standard certificates with additional-insured status. The Tampa Bay area’s Gulf-coast location carries genuine tropical-storm exposure, so cancellation and postponement coverage is worth weighing for summer and fall weddings.

FORT LAUDERDALE

Fort Lauderdale’s yacht, canal, and beach-resort venues offer waterfront glamour, and higher-end properties may ask for limits above the baseline. Coastal and on-the-water venues carry the same hurricane-season considerations as the rest of southeast Florida – factor early-purchased cancellation coverage into any June-through-November date.

SARASOTA

Sarasota pairs beachfront venues near Siesta Key with gardens, museums, and historic theaters. Most require a standard liability certificate with additional-insured status, and beachside ceremonies carry both everyday-weather and hurricane-season considerations worth planning around.

NAPLES

Naples is known for upscale Gulf-side resorts, golf clubs, and private estates, and those higher-end venues sometimes require limits above the $1M/$2M baseline plus specific additional-insured wording. Its southwest Gulf-coast location means hurricane-season timing matters – buy cancellation coverage when you book, not when a storm forms.

ST. AUGUSTINE

The nation’s oldest city offers historic and waterfront venues along the Matanzas River, some of them landmarked with specific certificate requirements. Ask early exactly how they need the paperwork completed, and factor Atlantic-coast hurricane season into any summer or fall date. Additional-insured status is expected either way.

PALM BEACH

Palm Beach’s oceanfront estates, country clubs, and resorts cater to formal weddings, and premium venues frequently require higher limits and precise additional-insured wording. Oceanfront settings carry clear hurricane-season exposure, so early-purchased cancellation coverage is worth having for warm-season dates.

JACKSONVILLE

Jacksonville’s St. Johns River waterfront, gardens, and historic districts offer a mix of modern and classic settings, and most venues require a standard liability certificate with additional-insured status. As a northeast-coast city, it carries Atlantic hurricane-season exposure worth weighing for summer and fall weddings.
