Wedding liability insurance is available for Texas weddings, and most Texas venues require it. A typical policy provides $1 million / $2 million in liability coverage from $128, with host liquor liability included, and Texas venues that ask for higher limits are easily accommodated. You can buy online up to the night before your event and print a Certificate of Insurance naming your venue as an additional insured in minutes.
WHAT TEXAS VENUES REQUIRE
Most Texas wedding venues require proof of liability insurance before they will confirm your date – usually a minimum of $1 million per occurrence and $2 million aggregate. Larger venues in Dallas, Houston, and Austin, and many ranch and winery properties, sometimes ask for higher limits, and nearly all of them ask to be named as an additional insured on your certificate, which extends your policy’s protection to the venue for your event.
Wedsure issues that Certificate of Insurance instantly, at whatever limit your venue requires – from the standard $1M/$2M up through $1M/$5M and higher – with the venue listed exactly as they have asked. You can email or print it the moment you buy, which matters in Texas, where venues often want proof of insurance on file well ahead of the event.
ALCOHOL AND HOST LIQUOR LIABILITY AT A TEXAS WEDDING
Texas handles alcohol liability differently from most states, and the difference shapes how you should plan your bar.
Texas draws a sharp line between commercial providers and private hosts.
Under the Texas Dram Shop Act (Alcoholic Beverage Code, Chapter 2), a licensed provider – a bar, caterer, or bartending service serving under a TABC permit – can be held liable if it serves someone who is obviously intoxicated to the point of being a clear danger, and that person then causes harm.
As a couple hosting your own wedding, you are generally a social host, and Texas law does not hold social hosts liable under its dram shop law for the actions of an intoxicated adult guest. That is narrower than it sounds: it does not prevent you from being named in a lawsuit on other grounds, which is one reason coverage matters no matter how protective the statute is.
Underage drinking is where Texas law reaches private hosts directly.
Furnishing alcohol to anyone under 21 is a criminal offense, and Texas law also creates civil liability for an adult who knowingly serves an underage guest, or knowingly allows one to be served on property the adult owns or leases, if that guest’s intoxication causes harm. The safest rule for your wedding is simple: no alcohol to anyone under 21, full stop, and instruct your bar service accordingly.
Money changing hands changes everything.
If guests pay for alcohol in any form, Texas may treat you as an unlicensed provider rather than a social host – held to the same standard as a bar, with permit requirements of their own. Exactly where that line falls depends on the details, so if your reception involves any payment connected to alcohol, talk to your bar service, your venue, and an insurance specialist before the event rather than after. (More on which coverage that calls for below.)
Most Texas couples solve all of this the same way: professional, TABC-certified bar service.
Note what that certification does and does not do – Texas’s training-based safe harbor protects the bar service as an employer, not you as the host. What protects you is the combination of their insurance and yours: ask any caterer or bartending service for a certificate of insurance showing their own liquor liability coverage and naming you as an additional insured, and carry your own host liquor liability alongside it.
So why do Texas venues require host liquor liability coverage from you even though the statute favors hosts?
Because statutes limit liability, not lawsuits – anyone connected to an alcohol incident can be named, and defending even a winning case is expensive. And a venue’s duty to keep its property reasonably safe sits outside the alcohol rules entirely. That is why venues ask you to carry host liquor liability and to add them as an additional insured.
On coverage: ‘Host Liquor Liability’ is included free with every Wedsure liability policy and is designed for hosts serving alcohol without charging guests for it – which fits most weddings and is the coverage most venues are asking for when they ask about alcohol. If you plan to charge for drinks in any way, that generally calls for separate ‘Liquor Liability’, which host liquor coverage does not provide – see the difference explained in our FAQ, get Liquor Liability through RVNA’s event insurance, or contact us and an insurance specialist will point you to the right coverage. All coverage is subject to the terms, conditions, and exclusions of the issued policy.

WEDDING VENUES ACROSS TEXAS AND WHAT THEY TYPICALLY REQUIRE
Texas offers as much range as any state – Hill Country wineries and ranches, Gulf-front beaches, historic missions, big-city ballrooms, and working stockyards. The kind of venue you choose shapes both the coverage you need and the requirements you have to meet, and Texas weather adds a regional layer worth planning around. Here is what to expect where couples ask most.
AUSTIN
Austin pairs modern downtown venues with Hill Country ranches and wineries just outside the city. Those outdoor Hill Country settings mean summer heat and sudden storms are real planning factors, and winery and ranch venues almost always require a certificate naming them as additional insured. TABC-certified bar service is standard around Austin, and Wedsure issues the certificate your venue needs at whatever limit they request.
HOUSTON
Houston’s large urban ballrooms, museums, and bayou-side venues often carry higher liability requirements than smaller properties, and additional-insured status is standard. As a Gulf-adjacent metro, Houston also carries genuine tropical-storm and flooding exposure during hurricane season, which makes cancellation and postponement coverage worth weighing for summer and fall dates.
DALLAS
Dallas offers upscale, design-forward venues where premium and landmarked properties frequently ask for limits above the $1M/$2M baseline. North Texas also sits squarely in spring storm and tornado season, so couples marrying in spring should give cancellation coverage particular thought. Confirm your venue’s exact limit and additional-insured wording before you finalize your policy.
SAN ANTONIO
San Antonio’s River Walk venues and historic missions bring real charm, and some historic or publicly managed venues have specific, well-defined certificate requirements. Ask early exactly how they need the paperwork completed, and factor in summer heat for outdoor riverside ceremonies. Additional-insured status is expected either way.
FORT WORTH
Fort Worth’s Stockyards, ranch venues, and Western-style event spaces are classic Texas settings, and most require a standard liability certificate with the venue named as additional insured. Many of these celebrations are outdoors, so summer heat and spring storms are worth planning around when you weigh postponement coverage.
GALVESTON
Galveston sits directly on the Gulf, which makes it a beautiful island wedding setting and also places it squarely in hurricane season from June through November. Beach and historic Strand-district venues require standard certificates and additional-insured status, and the island’s coastal-storm exposure makes cancellation and postponement coverage especially relevant here.
CORPUS CHRISTI
Corpus Christi’s bayfront and marina venues offer relaxed coastal weddings on the Gulf, with the same hurricane and tropical-storm considerations as the rest of the Texas coast. Venues require standard liability certificates and additional-insured status; given the season overlap, weigh cancellation coverage carefully for summer and fall dates.
HILL COUNTRY (FREDERICKSBURG)
The Fredericksburg area is one of Texas’s most popular wedding regions, full of wineries, ranches, and open-air chapels. Winery and ranch venues tend to be strict about additional-insured certificates, and the Hill Country’s exposure to summer heat and flash flooding makes it a place where both the right liability limit and cancellation coverage earn their keep.
ARLINGTON
In the heart of the DFW metroplex, Arlington’s large event venues and entertainment-district spaces range widely in size, and bigger or premium venues may require higher limits. Like the rest of North Texas, Arlington sits in spring storm and tornado country, so cancellation coverage is worth considering for spring dates. Additional-insured status is standard.
SOUTH PADRE ISLAND
South Padre is a Gulf barrier island and a favorite for destination beach weddings, which also means full exposure to hurricane and tropical-storm season. Beachfront and waterfront venues require standard certificates and additional-insured status, and the island’s coastal-weather risk makes cancellation and postponement coverage particularly worth having.
